DISTRACTION THEFT ALERT
Thieves are using quick, subtle tricks to steal phones, wallets and bags in shops, cafés, buses, busy streets and at ATMs. These crimes can happen to anyone.
They may:
• Drop something to distract you
• Ask a question and get close while pickpocketing
• Watch your PIN or interrupt you at a cash machine
• Pose as workers or professionals to gain your trust
If someone approaches you claiming to be from a company or organisation, always ask to see ID. Genuine staff won’t mind you checking who they are.
Protect yourself:
✔ Keep bags zipped and close to your body
✔ Avoid leaving valuables on tables or hanging on chairs
✔ Be cautious of anyone getting too close
✔ Never hand your phone or wallet to strangers
✔ Stay alert, especially in crowded areas
If you think you’ve been targeted, move somewhere safe, call 101 (or 999 in an emergency) and cancel any stolen bank cards immediately.
